Armed Forces Day 2021

In the Footsteps of Our Forces

Armed Forces Day 2021 event

Left. Right. Left. Right. Left.

Get your marching boots on and walk with the National Museum of the Royal Navy, National Army Museum, Royal Air Force Museum and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.

The National Museum of the Royal Navy, the National Army Museum, the Royal Air Force Museum and the Commonwealth War Graves Commission are joining forces for this virtual walk that kicks-off on Monday 21 June, Armed Forces Week.

Choose your distance – 5km, 10km or 25km - and join hundreds of others across the country to walk in honour of those who serve. This walk is virtual which means you can participate and complete it from anywhere in the world. You can start marching on Monday 21 June, Armed Forces Week, and have until Sunday 4 July to complete.

Every person who enters will be sent a one-of-a-kind medal to commemorate your achievement, which will be posted out to you after the event has ended.

The money from your entry will go towards the three museums, and the CWGC Foundation, which are all registered charities. All four charities preserve the history of the Armed Forces and inspire with stories of sacrifice and courage. Your support will help us continue to tell the stories of those who served and are still serving in the Armed Forces.

Entry to the Virtual Walk is £18.00* per person and all proceeds will go towards the RAF Museum, National Museum of the Royal Navy, National Army Museum and the Commonwealth War Graves foundation, all of which are registered charities.

We are offering discounted entry of £15.00* for our Armed Forces Community (including Veterans, cadets and serving personnel).

If you enter with 5 or more friends or family members then you will be eligible for a 10% discount on tickets. If you are a group of 10 or more then a 15% discount will apply. Tickets must be purchased at once, and they will be emailed to one address.

There is no age limit for those taking part, but we advise all children are accompanied by an adult.

*includes the booking fee.

How Does the Virtual Walk Work?

Carry on reading for more information on all these steps.

Tracking Your Distance

We accept screenshots or images of your distance tracker device or app as proof of walk. Alternatively, please download the distance log to record your walk(s).

DOWNLOAD - In the Footsteps of our Forces Distance Log (Word)

You will receive further details and a link to the portal a few days before the event.

You will need to submit your distance log by Friday 23 July at the very latest, but please note late submission will result in medal delays.

Planning Your Walk

You are free to choose your own path, but why not try one of our suggested routes. We will be sharing some information in the next few weeks that will get you exploring museums, war graves, historical sites and places of remembrance.

Purchase a Souvenir T-shirt

You can purchase a souvenir t-shirt to be delivered with your medal following the end of the Virtual Walk.

T-shirts are £14.00 per person and sizes range from XSmall to XX Large.

Your entry is an amazing message of support for us, and enables us to continue sharing the stories of our Armed Forces. But if you would like to support the Museums and Commonwealth War Graves Commission with an additional donation you will be able to do so when you purchase your ticket. There is an option to add a donation amount of £5.00, £10.00 or £15.00 as part of the entry process.

All income from tickets and donations will be split equally between the four organisations.

Taking Part Safely

Please always take your own health and the health of others into consideration. We would ask you to follow current advice from Public Health England and the Government about preventing the spread of Covid-19 before starting your walk.

Here are our top tips for marching in the right direction:

  • Make sure you’ve packed supplies suitable for the weather
  • Take a bottle of water with you
  • Phone is fully charged
  • Footwear is suitable for the terrain you will be marching over
