Welcome to our FAQ page — your go-to spot for clear, helpful answers to our most common questions. Whether you’re planning your visit, checking opening times, working out how to get here, or looking for details about a specific museum site, we’ve grouped everything into general enquiries and site-specific information to make it easy to find what you need before you arrive.

General Enquiries

Yes we do - companions accompanying a full-paying visitor that requires additional support may obtain a free carer’s ticket for the day, either online under ‘Select Ticket Type’ or at our reception on site. We politely request that visitors show proof of additional support required - this can be a PIPs letter, DLA paperwork, Blue Badge, Carers ID or similar.

Gift cards can be purchased online and on our site. We have 5 different value options available. £15, £25, £40, £50 or £60. These can be used to purchase tickets and items in our shop and cafe. All gift cards will expire after a year. Gift cards must be redeemed online via a promotional code sent to your inbox, or in person, we cannot redeem these over the phone. Yes all adult tickets need to be individually named and ID checks are in place at all our entries.

If you have lost your tickets, please reach out to the Customer Engagement Team via phone or email and the team will look to locate your order on the system. If you are able to provide any details on your order the team will endeavour to trace your tickets.

Tickets purchased online and in person are valid for 12 months entry from the visit date selected at the time of purchase. As outlined in our terms and conditions, once the order is submitted we are unable to cancel, amend or modify a booking, and therefore sadly we are unable to change the first visit date for your ticket. Rest assured your tickets are still valid and can be used on another date of your choice within your 12 month ticket validity period.

You are welcome to take non-commercial photographs (without the use of flash). For commercial enquiries, please contact our team in advance of your visit via email on: filming@nmrn.org.uk. Please note, the use of tripods is prohibited onsite.

When purchased online, tickets are sent within the hour. However, as our order confirmation emails have the ticket attachment, they may sometimes arrive in customers’ junk or spam inboxes. Be sure to check your spam inbox and search emails received from The Fleet Air Arm Museum. If you still can’t find the order confirmation email, please contact us with your order date and total paid for your tickets.

Following feedback from our visitors, you no longer need to pre-book a return visit. Simply bring along your annual tickets plus ID to check on arrival, and enjoy your visit!

All discounted tickets require verification upon arrival and can only be redeemed on the day at our reception and tickets cannot be purchased online (unless stated otherwise). We are a large destination so this means will be able to accommodate our visitors, please note some attractions times do vary and maybe closed due to unforeseen circumstances. See our current opening times and attractions here. Any discount entitled to has to be claimed at point of purchase,we are unable to retrospectively offer the discount on your ticket.

If you’re certain money has been withdrawn from your account, we would recommend not making any further purchases and reaching out to our Customer Engagement team via email so they can investigate what has happened.

National Museum of the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard

Our ticket covers entry to all Portsmouth and Gosport attractions and we do not offer single tickets for individual attractions. By offering a 12 month all inclusive ticket, visitors are able to explore all attractions at their own leisure flexibly across the year. Yes you can collect a free Historic Quarter Pass from our Visiotr Centre upon arrival. This allows you to walk around the site and enter our shops/cafes without paying to go on the attractions themselves.

We regret that with the exception of assistance and guide pets, animals are not permitted on site to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard or Submarine Museum. Explosion Museum allow pets to their cafe though they will not be permitted inside the museum itself.

Yes! At Explosion, visitors can enjoy our Camber Lights cafe offering a range of drinks and snacks overlooking the views of Portsmouth Harbour. We are dog-friendly and welcome both museum and non-museum guests. Camber Lights cafe is open 11am – 3pm Wednesday – Sunday, extending to 7 days a week opening during Hampshire School holidays. We have multiple options for those wanting food and drink when they exploring our site. You can find our Boathouse 7 restaurant/cafe, Boathouse 4 restaurant and a further cafe at the Mary Rose Museum. (On PHD FAQs) To find out more see our onsite facilities page. 

Portsmouth Historic Dockyard official car park is just 400 yards from the entrance at Victory Gate. Please note, there is a height restriction of 2.1m for the car park. If this car park is full, additional parking is available nearby at Gunwharf Quays and Havant Street. Please do not attempt to enter the dockyard via Trafalgar Gate. Disabled parking spaces are also available within the car park.

Fleet Air Arm Museum

Fleet Air Arm Museum is open Wednesday - Sunday 10:00 - 16:30 with a last entry time of 15:00. In South Somerset school holidays, Fleet Air Arm Museum is open 7 days a week.

Yes, located in Hall One inside the Museum, Warnefords Café serves a variety of sandwiches, hot pasties and sausages rolls, delicious cakes and other tasty treats alongside a wide range of hot and cold drinks. With children’s lunch boxes, vegan and gluten free options available daily, it’s the perfect spot to recharge and refuel for a light lunch or snack during your visit. When seating is available visitors who have brought their own picnic can sit in the cafe. Our cafe opening hours are 10:00-14:00

The Museum has a large car park (230 spaces) which is situated to the left immediately upon entering the site, 15 spaces are allocated to disabled visitors. All Parking onsite is FREE and no advance booking is required.

We recommend allowing at least 2 hours to explore our amazing site. Don't forget to add an extra 40 minutes to your visit to enjoy our Aircraft Carrier Experience.

Yes we do have a gift shop on site! All profits from sales go towards conserving naval history. We also have an online shop which can be viewed here

The carrier experience is wheelchair accessible. Please note some aircraft themselves however are not fully accessible. Please see our Accessibility page linked here for further information.

National Museum of The Royal Navy Hartlepool

The National Museum of The Royal Navy Hartlepool is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10:00-17:00 in our summer hours and 11:00-16:00 in our winter hours. The site is open 7 days a week during Hartlepool Borough School Holidays. Please note HMS Trincomalee runs on set entry times only in winter. These are at 11:30, 13:00 and 15:00.

We do indeed, our cafe is called the The Quayside Coffee Shop. The cafe's opening hours are aligned with the museum's operating days. During Summer hours, the cafe is open from 10:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Our Winter hours are seasonally adjusted, so please contact us directly before your visit to confirm the schedule though limited food and beverage can be provided from our reception if required. Please note that the cafe is always open during school holidays and on weekends.

Yes, we have a free car park on site. The car park closes at 5pm in summer hours and 4pm in winter hours. Please be aware that any cars left in the car park after this time are at risk of being locked in.

To enjoy the HMS Trincomalee and all our galleries onsite, we recommend at least 2 hours to explore everything. Along with visiting the HMS Trincomalee and its decks, we have an accompanying exhibiton on the ship. We also have exhibitions called Diving Deep: HMS Invincible 1744 and our Horrible Histories Pirates exhibition. You are welcome to see our Georgian Quayside and Fighting Ships whilst at the museum. If you weren't able to fit all this in on one day, then do not worry our tickets are valid for 12 months so you can come back on another day!

The Gun Deck onboard HMS Trincomalee is accessible to wheelchair users however our lifts are currently out of service. Unfortunately, this is due to the age of the equipment and difficulty in sourcing compatible parts. Wheelchairs can access all external areas of the quayside, however please be aware of cobbled areas (which can be slippery when wet) and frequent changes in ground levels around the historic quayside.

HMS Caroline, Belfast

HMS Caroline is open Friday-Sunday with 8 tours scheduled throughout the day, from 10am until 3.15pm. During Northern Ireland school holidays, the ship will be open Wednesday - Sunday for free flow visits. All of our tours are subject to change, so please check our social media pages regularly to keep updated with our latest opening hours and tour times.

HMS Caroline stocks a very basic range of cold drinks and snacks on board, these are available to purchase from the Museum Shop.
Visitors are also welcome to bring their own snacks to enjoy at our on-site picnic area.

Yes, we offer free parking on site, including disabled parking.

A guided tour lasts 45 minutes. Please arrive at least 10 minutes before your guided tour is due to start.

The majority of the ship is accessible for wheelchair users and our guided tour route has been designed with this mobility in mind.
Visitors should be aware that the Captain's Quarters and Engine Room are not accessible to wheelchairs, and due to the historic nature of this vessel the corridors on the ship are original and are narrow.

No, please just bring your ticket and some ID with you to present to our front of house teams.

Explosion Museum of Naval Firepower

The Explosion Museum opens at 10am until 4:30pm with final entry to the museum at 4:00pm. The museum is open Wednesday - Sunday all year round and 7 days a week during Hampshire school holidays.

Here at the Explosion Museum we do allow pets to our cafe though they will not be permitted inside the museum itself.

Royal Navy Submarine Museum

The Royal Navy Submarine Museum is open Wednesday-Sunday from 10:00-16:30 with a last entry time of 16:00. During school holidays the museum is open 7 days a week

We regret that with the exception of assistance and guide pets, animals are not permitted on site at The Submarine Museum.

Snacks, sandwiches, drinks and ice creams are available during your visit from the Visitor Centre.
During Hampshire School holidays additional hot snacks and pasties are available from the onsite Harbour Coffee Stop situated outside our Visitor Centre. Visitors are also welcome to bring their own picnic to enjoy on-site.

We have a free car park on site. The car park closes at 4.45pm. Please be aware that any cars left in the carpark after this time are at risk of being locked in.

Yes! Our Submarine Museum gift shop can be found at the entrance next to our visitor centre. All profits from sales go towards conserving naval history. Our gift shop is also available online here
