Story Exchange Intergenerational Film Project

Over the summer 20 year 5 pupils from Stamshaw Junior School became documentary film makers to capture the fascinating and inspiring stories of naval veterans from World War 2 to the present day.

Story Exchange

Funded by the Heritage Lottery as part of the Storehouse 10: New Galleries project, the children worked with Harvest Films to interview eight veterans including a WREN Telegraphist from World War Two and a Marine Reservist who recently served in Afghanistan.

The budding documentary makers had to learn a variety of new skills including interview techniques and how to ask questions sensitively as well camera, lighting and sound techniques. For the veterans, the project gave them a chance to tell their stories and broaden people’s understanding of their work as well as issues facing servicemen and women.

The films created will be shown in the new galleries opening in 2014. The work will also be showcased at a film premiere due to be held at the National Museum of the Royal Navy in November.
