'A Sea of Poppies' Community Project

Calling all knitters and crafters of Portsmouth, Gosport and the surrounding areas. The National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth is joining forces with the Royal Navy Submarine Museum in Gosport in a project to invite local residents to commemorate the bravery of the men and women who served their country during the First World War in a major Art Installation.

You will be given the opportunity to create a ship or submarine crest and knit or crochet a poppy to commemorate the losses during WW1. These will form part of the art installation that will become an integral part of a remembrance week trail that links sites of local heritage and historical importance including HMS- Hear My Story Galleries and HMS Alliance throughout the week of 3rd to 9th November 2014.

To be part of this remembrance project, throughout September and October FREE workshops will run for people to discover more about the many losses incurred by both the surface fleet ships and those beneath the waves. There will be the opportunity to handle some genuine artefacts that are not on display, talk to our experts and share stories.
