Discover the fascinating stories of animals that have sailed with the Royal Navy throughout history. Get up close with exotic creatures and explore the surprising roles dads play in the animal kingdom.
Throughout history, animals have travelled with the Royal Navy—some as mascots, others as companions, and a few who even earned unofficial ranks aboard ships. From parrots and monkeys to cats and goats, these animals have left their pawprints on naval life. Now you can dive into their stories and meet some exotic creatures for yourself in an exciting, hands-on experience.
Join Zoolab for one of their interactive 45-minute animal shows, where you'll come face-to-face with some incredible creatures from across the globe. Get up close with snakes, spiders, lizards and more, while learning all about the fascinating and sometimes surprising roles that fathers play in the animal kingdom.
That’s not all! Step aboard for our interactive animal tour and uncover some of the true stories of wildlife that once called Royal Navy ships home. Find out why certain animals were brought on board, how they were cared for at sea, and the roles they played in daily life for sailors of the past.
For those curious about the creepy crawlies we try to keep off ships today, join our Conservation Team for a closer look at the insects that threaten historic wooden vessels like HMS Trincomalee. Discover how we protect the ship from pests that eat through timber and fabrics—and take part in a hands-on activity where kids can search for insects around the site and view their finds under a microscope. It’s a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the vital work that helps preserve our maritime heritage.
Young visitors can also enjoy the Polly Parrot Trail, a fun and educational activity where families can explore HMS Trincomalee and learn about the various animals that once lived aboard this historic ship. Complete the trail to win a small prize and become an honorary animal expert!
Whether you’re an animal lover, a history enthusiast, or just looking for a fun and engaging day out, this is a perfect event for the whole family. Come along and celebrate the fathers of the animal kingdom and the creatures that made waves in naval history!
This event is free with a valid museum ticket.
