HMS Vanguard Statement

The National Museum of the Royal Navy is proud to have worked closely with Orkney Islands Council and the Ministry of Defence, in our capacity as their principal advisor on naval heritage, to recover items connected to HMS Vanguard.

It is clear that these objects are of high heritage significance. They represent not only the extraordinary story of the ship and her loss but also the sacrifice of those who served aboard her. The recovered items – including the ship’s bell – speak powerfully to the violence of Vanguard’s tragic end and the human cost of war

Royal Air Force and Royal Marines heritage awarded £13.7m National Lottery funding

Celebrating the 80th anniversary of VE Day, The National Lottery Heritage Fund has provided significant funding to preserve the legacies of the Royal Air Force and, the Royal Marines. The RAF Museum Midlands received £9.3m for development, the National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth secured £4.4m to create a dedicated Royal Marines Experience, honouring their 360-year history. The Princess Royal Pays a Royal Visit to Fleet Air Arm Museum

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal paid a special visit to Barracuda Live: The Big Rebuild at Fleet Air Arm Museum, which is celebrating it’s 60th birthday this year after being opened by HRH Prince Phillip in 1964.

The Princess Royal was able to meet staff and volunteers whilst viewing first-hand the project aiming to save the world's only Second World War Fairey Barracuda from extinction.
