Embark on a voyage of discovery to the Worlds Beneath the Waves, a new exhibition launching this September in Portsmouth, which delves into the extraordinary tale of the HMS Challenger Expedition 150 years ago.
Launched in partnership by the National Museum of the Royal Navy and the National Oceanography Centre. Experience a journey back in time, learning how the Challenger Expedition forever altered our understanding of the Earth's ocean. Plus, how the Royal Navy is still at the forefront of scientific discovery, collecting research which helps us understand our changing ocean - on which human wellbeing depends.
The Worlds Beneath the Waves exhibition features the voices of the men and women at the forefront of marine biology, and provides opportunities to explore scientific ideas through interactive exhibits, getting up close and personal with the famous Boaty McBoatface and the chance to create your own AI-generated sea creature.
Diana Davies, Head of Conservation at The National Museum of the Royal Navy said:
"HMS Challenger's legacy extends far beyond its famous voyage. The expedition inspired generations of ocean scientists and the data the expedition generated is still being used to help us understand the wonders of the deep sea, even today.
“It’s never been more important to understand the role the ocean plays in the future of our planet, and we’re so excited to welcome visitors to this new exhibition on a journey of discovery that takes you through the very beginnings of true oceanography, to the work of the modern navy and the findings" of contemporary marine scientists at the forefront of their field."

So much of our ocean is yet to be discovered and its vital role in regulating our climate, weather and ecosystems is often overlooked.
Through our work at NOC, we improve knowledge of the ocean and how it influences and is influenced by people. This inspiring exhibit is an excellent opportunity to raise awareness of the challenges our ocean faces, the knowledge needed to inform solutions, and the role emerging technologies play in delivering these answers."

What was the Challenger expedition?
HMS Challenger embarked on its monumental journey in 1872, equipped with a team of brilliant scientists and state-of-the-art equipment, spending four years exploring uncharted waters across the globe on a mission to discover the secrets of the deep sea. They unveiled an array of bizarre and wondrous creatures, and discovered the Mariana Trench, the deepest point on the planet, revolutionising our understanding of marine biology, geology, and oceanography.
