Science Below Decks - Float Your Boat

Summer STEM events based on the theme of Pioneers of Belfast, Harland and Wolff, and HMS Caroline pioneers, engineer Rachel Parsons
This summer set sail for HMS Caroline for the ultimate family adventure. Step on board and get hands on with our science themed family activities. We have something for everyone to enjoy whether you want to use your engineering skills to build a boat, get creative with our craft activities or explore the science of robotics. What will be your favourite? Take a look below to see all our activities which are included within your museum ticket.
Float your Boat: Put your engineering skills to the test! Use everyday materials to design and build a boat—then see if it floats in our water tank. The level up and see if your creation can carry a load of cargo without sinking
Build the Crane Inspired by the iconic Harland & Wolff cranes: Take on a challenge as you create your own towering crane using building blocks, or craft materials. How tall and strong can yours be?
Step into the shoes of a real inventor like engineer Rachel Parsons!: Choose a problem to solve and use your imagination (plus loads of fun materials) to design and prototype your own brand-new gadget.
Tiny Turbines: Calling young inventors to explore motion and mechanics by creating their own colourful paper windmills. Learn how simple machines work and celebrate the legacy of one of the UK’s first female engineers!
Submerged Building Block Robotics: Be inspired by the incredible legacy of Harland and Wolff shipbuilders and the work of engineer Rachel Parsons as you develop teamwork, problem-solving, and creative skills while having fun with robots
These events are free with a valid museum ticket.
