Essential A3 Works at Mile End Road – Travel Advice for Visitors

Visitors planning a trip to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard over the coming weekends are advised to allow extra time for their journeys.

As part of keeping Portsmouth powered safely for future generations, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks will be carrying out urgent underground cabling works on the A3 near Mile End Road on:

6 to 8 March 2026
13 to 15 March 2026

The works are essential to repair a fault on a cable that supplies electricity to tens of thousands of homes and businesses across the city.

What this means for visitors

Northbound and southbound traffic on the A3 will remain open, but partial lane closures will be in place across both weekends. No full road closures or diversions are planned, and there are no planned interruptions to power supplies.

Traffic management will be in operation and some delays are expected.

Travel advice

If you are visiting Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, we recommend planning ahead to make the most of your day of discovery.

You may wish to consider:

  • Portsmouth Park and Ride, located just off Junction 1 of the M275. Additional services will be running.

  • Travelling by train to Portsmouth Harbour Station. No rail disruption is planned during the works.

  • Parking at Havant or Fareham railway stations and continuing your journey by rail.

  • Walking and cycling routes will remain open.

These repairs are being carried out now to reduce the risk of a significant power outage in the future. We thank visitors for their patience and understanding while these essential works take place and look forward to welcoming you to your next Generation of Discovery.
