The Royal Marines Museum
IN SEARCH OF A NEW HOME
The Royal Marines are without a museum, their story hidden from view. After being deemed no longer fit for purpose and with collections at risk, the old museum in Eastney closed in 2017.
Since then, the National Museum of the Royal Navy has been working towards creating a new Royal Marines Museum at the heart of the Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, placing the singular history of the Corps in its rightful place within the wider story of the Royal Navy.
HISTORY OF THE ROYAL MARINES
“If ever the hour of real danger comes to England they will be found the country’s sheet anchor" — King George III upon bestowing the title of ‘Royal Marines’, 1802.
The Corps of Royal Marines is the amphibious light infantry arm of the Royal Navy and the United Kingdom's Commando Force. The modern Corps provides a unique capability and is held in high readiness for worldwide rapid response and is capable of meeting a wide variety of threats and security challenges.
The Corps’ current structure and operational approach has been forged by a rich and varied 355-year history. The Royal Marines can trace their origins to the formation of the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot in 1664 at the outbreak of the Second Anglo-Dutch War. Since then they have assumed many roles, their history being one of constant adaptation to meet the contemporary security challenges and the demands of the harsh environments in which they operate.
