Escape from HMS Coventry

James Matthews was Chief Mechanician in HMS Coventry in May 1982. On the 25th May the ship was stationed to the north-west of the Falkland Islands as a decoy – diverting attacking aircraft from the ships in San Carlos Water. Two pairs of Argentinian Sky Hawk aircraft attacked in waves; despite brave defence Coventry was hit twice by 1,000 lb bombs on her port side. She sank within 20 minutes, 19 crew died and a further 30 were injured.
