Salary (Grade 5):  £27,530 - £30,350 per annum (dependent upon experience)

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (will involve some weekend working)

Location: Work across National Museum of the Royal Navy in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard (PHD); Submarine Museum and Explosion in Gosport

This is an exciting opportunity for an individual who is currently employed within a management role to support the General Manager to deliver an outstanding visitor experience and to contribute towards achieving key performance indicators to build future business resilience.

You will lead and motivate the team of Visitor Experience Managers to provide an extraordinary day out that will delight and inspire our visitors.  Inspiring and taking responsibility for achieving commercial targets relating to Guidebook sales, gift aid conversion, upselling tickets, and our retail outlets.

Safety of our sites is of upmost importance, and you will be responsible for undertaking health and safety walk arounds on our historic ships, as well as making sure our sites and attractions are safe and welcoming for our visitors and staff.

The Operations Manager will deputise for the General Manager in their absence and liaise and work with our PHD Business Partners to ensure the smooth operation of the site.

Key Opportunities

• The ability to make a difference to the visitor experience within a unique heritage environment.

• Contribute to projects such as site developments (refurbishments, new ways of working, policy development, etc.)

• Be a key influence in delivering commercial targets and finding fun ways to motivate teams to achieve these. 


• Previous experience of managing teams, including 1:1’s, appraisals, performance management, development plans and motivating individuals to fulfill their potential; and rota management.

• An ability to prioritise tasks, effectively delegate and communicate (both verbal and written) is essential.

• The applicant must be able to demonstrate a passion for commercial awareness and excellent customer care in a fast-paced multi-site environment as well as being a team player.
